23.03.2005 The new Alfa Romeo Racing Team joined BMW, SEAT, Ford and Chevrolet on track at Monza yesterday as a new dawn in touring car racing began

The new Alfa Romeo Racing Team joined BMW, SEAT, Ford and Chevrolet on track at Monza yesterday as a new dawn in touring car racing began.

The 2005 FIA World Touring Car Championship was launched on Tuesday morning, during a crowded press conference at the historic Italian Grand Prix circuit. More than two hundred journalists, photographers and TV crew members from over twenty different countries attended the event, together with many guests, including the manufacturer's representatives and drivers.

The press conference to launch the series took place in the media centre, during a break between the different sessions of the official testing that have been started at 9.00 in the morning.

During the press conference, Marcello Lotti, promoter of the FIA WTCC said: ?Four years ago in Monza, we had started from scratch with the FIA European Touring Car Championship. If by then somebody would have told me that in four years we were here again to start a World Championship, I would have said he was mad??

Jacques Behar, chairman of KSO and managing director of Eurosport, unveiled the worldwide TV distribution for the season: ?Besides Eurosport usual coverage, the FIA WTCC will be broadcast on a number of premiere national TV channels, like the RAI in Italy, TF1 in France, TVE in Spain, ZDF in Germany and TV Azteca in Mexico. And other negotiations are still ongoing.?

An unexpected special guest attended at the last minute, Lapo Elkann, manager of Fiat Auto brand promotion. After the press conference was over he enjoyed a ride in one of the Alfa Romeo 156 racers driven by factory pilot Augusto Farfus.

Farfus fastest for Alfa Romeo on track

In fact it was Alfa Romeo's young Brazilian driver Augusto Farfus who set the fastest time around Monza during the FIA WTCC's official first day of testing.
The newly christened and re-branded 'Alfa Romeo Racing Team', with 2005 driver's Gabriele Tarquini, Fabrizio Giovanardi, Augusto Farfus and James Thompson all on hand, where on track joined by their factory WTCC rivals: BMW, SEAT, Ford and Chevrolet, as well as selected competitors from this year's CSAI-promoted Italian Touring Car Championship.

Farfus and his Alfa Romeo 156 finished the opening day of testing fractionally faster than the leading BMW 320i race cars of Germans, Jorg and Dirk Müller, and Spaniard, García. However, is was former the Alfa Romeo Autodelta factory driver Roberto Colciago who created the biggest surprise of the day, when he set the fifth fastest time overall at the wheel of the promising JAS Motorsport run Honda Accord.

World Touring Car Championship newcomers Ford and Chevrolet appear to still have a lot of work to do to close the gap to Alfa Romeo and BMW as they languished all day at the bottom of the timesheets, well away from the pace, while the SEAT cars failed to confirm the strong performances they had turned in during their recent testing in Magny-Cours and Silverstone.

Monza Test Times - Day 1

1st Farfus Alfa Romeo 1:59.492, 2nd J. Müller BMW 1:59.525, 3rd D. 24.03.2005 The Alfa Romeo Racing Team's Augusto Farfus emerged once again as the fastest driver on the second FIA WTCC official test day in Monza

The Alfa Romeo Racing Team's Augusto Farfus emerged once again as the fastest driver on the second FIA WTCC official test day in Monza.

Alfa Romeo?s Brazilian youngster improved by seven tenths of a second his previous day's quickest time, and set the fastest lap of the day in 1:58.783. He was the only driver to go under the one minute and fifty nine second mark.

Second fastest time went to his team mate Gabriele Tarquini, demonstrating that the ultra-successful Alfa Romeo 156 is once again this year going to be at the forefront of the chase for title honours.

Dirk Müller set the third fastest time, just head of team mate Jorg, this pair the best of the BMW cars. Behind then came the other two factory Alfas of James Thompson and Fabrizio Giovanardi, meaning all four were in the top six combined day one and two positions.

Roberto Colciago?s JAS Motorsport Honda Civic, 8th fastest, and Jordi Gené?s SEAT Toledo Cupra, 10th fastest, were the only cars to break the Alfa Romeo-BMW lock-out in the the top ten.

Most of the drivers improved consistently over the two days, and Stefano D?Aste emerged as the best of the Independents, setting an excellent 13th fastest time in his Proteam Motorsport BMW 320i. Gianluca De Lorenzi remained the fastest of the Italian Championship?s competitors, despite missing the second half of the final day due to a crash at the Ascari. Attributed to a brake failure, his BMW crashed into the barriers, but the driver escaped with only a sore neck.

25.03.2005 This week during the FIA WTCC Media Day at Monza Alfa Romeo presented their new team and on the track topped the timesheets

Two days of tests have taken place at the Monza circuit in preparation for the first event in the World Touring Car Championship, which will get underway at this circuit on April 10 next.

All four official Alfa Romeo Racing Team drivers were present at the wheel of Alfa 156 racers: Gabriele Tarquini, Fabrizio Giovanardi, Augusto Farfus and James Thompson, each participated in the six scheduled test sessions.

Young Brazilian driver Farfus distinguished himself with the best time, 1:58.7 in the second session held on Wednesday March 23, confirming his excellent feel for the Italian circuit where he won his first race with an Alfa Romeo in the 2003 European Championship.

The second best time was again set by an Alfa Romeo driver, Gabriele Tarquini, in 1:59.0, ahead of Dirk Muller's BMW, 1:59.3. Only three tenths of a second behind him was James Thompson in the third factory Alfa 156, 1:59.6, who in turn finished a mere one tenth of a second in front of team mate Fabrizio Giovanardi, who posted a 1:59.7. For the Alfa Romeo Racing Team the focus was on an overall test of the cars, race simulation and brake tests, apart from overall fine-tuning of the set-up for the April 10 race.

The Scuderia Antonelli Sport team's private-entry Alfa Romeo 156s with drivers Salvatore Tavano and Andrea Larini performed excellently too, with times of 2:00.8 and 2:01.2 respectively.

The 15 drivers entered for the European Alfa Challenge - international events reserved for the Alfa 147 GTA Cup racer - were also present. Best time among them was set by Maurizio Campani, 2:09.4, followed by Simone Iacone, 2:09.9, and Irish driver Eoin Murray, 2:10.2.

Augusto Farfus: 'Once again the Monza circuit brought out the best in me and with the Alfa 156 I always manage to achieve excellent times. In fast sections the powerful engine and excellent aerodynamics help us to be the fastest.'

Gabriele Tarquini: 'We've worked well over these two days, getting the set-up ready for the opening race in the Championship. As the brakes are larger this year we put them through some particularly severe tests.'

Fabrizio Giovanardi: 'I wasn't pushing for the best overall time. We managed to do a race simulation and get the engine in shape for our first outing this season.'

James Thompson: 'It was great to be back in an Alfa 156, and for the first time I'll race the whole season in this car. In these tests it was important to get the set-up right specifically for this fast circuit.'

Alfa Romeo driver James Thompson took command of a spectacular race in front of a huge crowd and crossed the finish line ahead of his FIA World Touring Car Championship rivals. Thompson, who started the second race in second place, overtook Rydell (who was on pole on the top-eight reverse grid) at the start and managed to hold on to the lead for the duration. However, it was by no means an easy ride to success ? with winner of race one, Dirk Müller edging closer and closer as the laps were counted down. Thompson finished 0.530 seconds ahead of Dirk?s BMW 320i.
At the start Giovanardi stalled the engine from the second row. Rydell started on pole but was swiftly overtaken by the eventual race winner, García and Dirk, before crashing during lap two after Farfus hit him from behind. This was clearly a disappointment for the SEAT Sport Team but their Spanish driver, Gené, gained valuable points by finishing in 6th place.
The fight for the win turned into a war halfway through the race. After Rydell went off, Colciago crashed at Lesmo on lap 5. One lap later another collision eliminated De Lorenzi and Huff. García was chasing Thompson, but he made a mistake and lost three positions. At the beginning of the 6th lap, the leading pack arrived at the first chicane and all six drivers ? Thompson, Dirk, Farfus, Tarquini, García and Priaulx ? tried to brake as late as possible. Thompson cut across the grass, Farfus ran wide, while Dirk and Tarquini clashed; the Italian brunted the worst of it and crashed.
In the final lap García managed to keep third place despite a final assault from Jörg Müller, who had recovered from 29th on the grid.
It was another excellent performance from the independent driver, Mark Hennerici. He took 10th position in his BMW, an improvement of 3 places from his finish in the first race. Chevrolet too made progress in the second of the races with Nicola Larini claiming a very encouraging 15th place. Zanardi was again the quickest of the Italian Superturismo drivers and is clearly also a presence in the FIA WTCC as he finished seventh overall.

>RACE 1 ? GIOVANARDI AND TARQUINI MAKE 1-2

The grandstands were fully packed when the race started; official figures were 71,000 spectators over the three days.
Due to the implementation of penalties, Colciago (qualified 1st), Terting (qualified 2nd) Farfus (qualified 4th) and Plato (qualified 10th) were all demoted by ten positions on the grid for the start of Race 1.
At the start Giovanardi took the lead from pole position, followed by team mate Thompson. During the first lap Tarquini overtook Gené for third, García overtook Huff, and Coronel climbed one position to 8th. In lap 2, Gené touched the wall at the entrance of turn 15 and was unable to continue. Colciago overtook Menu, Coronel, Huff and García in the next 2 laps to jump to 5th.
Terting overtook Coronel for 8th position in lap 4. Over the next two laps, Colciago had Rydell in his sights and eventually overtook the SEAT driver in the first turn of lap 7. In the same lap, the BMW cars of Priaulx and Zanardi made contact at turn 4. The former went to the pits and rejoined for the last few laps whereas the latter continued and finished 13th overall.
Tarquini claimed 2nd position from team-mate Thompson in lap 8 while Dirk Müller was chasing Huff. The Chevrolet was just 0.192 of a second ahead of Müller at the start of lap 8 but soon pulled away with a gap of over two seconds. Colciago?s storming progress ended as a gearbox failure meant he retired to the pits.
While Giovanardi and Tarquini pulled away with a gap of 10 seconds, Rydell was chasing Thompson for the third podium position and eventually overtook him on lap 14. In the meantime, Rydell?s team-mate, Terting was battling with Huff, for 6th place, the latter made a move on lap 16 and crossed the finishing line ahead of the young German, scoring Chevrolet?s first points in the Drivers? Championship. Dirk Müller was close behind the pair until he also hit the wall on the banking and retired. García finished in 5th position, the best of the BMW cars(mislim sta reci losa ova nasa PREDNJA VUCHA  . Coronel won the Independent category with a brilliant 8th place overall.
